When I first learned how to photograph families I always said that I wanted to focus on offering a “Candid Style”, but didn’t know how to do it. “Just smile!” I would say. I expected the parents to know what I wanted, to start interacting with their kids, start running in circles and giving me the poses that I so desperately craved to create. Instead of making you wait to figure this out on your own, let me give you a few trade secrets that I’ve picked up to offer beautiful high end galleries to your clients with these 5 Tips From a Seasoned Photographer:
Capture The Details
Think Outside of the Box! Don’t just capture the full family photo, but focus on the small moments and the details as they unfold.
Change of POV
I like to physically walk around my families as I’m capturing them in motion. This offer a different perspective and creative style.
Have Prompts on Hand
Offering your families different prompts instead of poses is the best way to create real smiles! Use these to change up your galleries from family to family so you never get bored!
- “Does she like to be tossed in the air?”
- “Mom, could you spin her gently?”
- “Where’s momma’s nose? Mom could you munch on her little baby finger!”
Switch Lenses for a New View
I love changing between my 35 & 85- my two favorite lenses! I do this maybe 2 or 3 times through out my session just to give myself a fresh perspective! Adding these different styles to the gallery ensures my client’s happiness, too!
Play With The Light
You’ve always been told to shoot down at the sun so that you’re not getting any lens flare… but what if you want to play with it and see the artistic style that comes from it? This might open up your artsy side and offer some new insights to light.
I hope these 5 Tips From a Seasoned Photographer help you create a gallery that you can be proud of! There’s always something else out there for you to learn, but if I can make that process easier for you then I’m here for it!
